3 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Hiring a Coach

Whether it’s a long, or short-term commitment, hiring a business coach is an investment. The last thing I want you to do is to feel like you should hire a coach, but end up choosing someone who isn’t the right fit for you.

Here are three important things to consider and ask yourself before you hire a business coach as a virtual service provider:

Question 1: What are you hoping to achieve?

This may feel like a scary question that you’d rather avoid at this stage. It is, however, one of the most important things you should get really clear on before hopping on a discovery call with someone.

For example, you may be looking to jump into your business full-time, or phase into it while still working at your current 9-5 job.

Whatever the case, you don’t need to have all your steps figured out yet, but you should have a clear vision of what you really want. Consider where you see yourself in 6 months, in one year, and then in 3 years.

Once you have that vision in your mind, next-step decisions will be much easier to make. You’ll be able to decide what fits into that lifestyle and what doesn’t.

When you hire a coach, they’ll need to understand what your big goals are so they can help you achieve them and also hold you accountable. If you’ve got your goals in mind and think that I might be a good fit to be your coach (I’m honored!), let’s schedule a 45-minute chat and see if we’re on the same page.

Question 2: What style of coaching works best for you?

Next, you’ll want to think about what areas of your business you’re struggling with the most, and even consider your personality and learning style.

Do you like to have a mentor who has been in your shoes?

Someone who can answer any, and all questions you might encounter?

Or do you prefer to have someone coach you on what your next steps should be and hold you to your goals?

Taking how you like to learn into account will help you decide whether mentorship, coaching, or a blend of both is right for you. Fun fact: my coaching style tends to be a good mix of mentoring and coaching, if that’s your thing!

Check out my services page for more info on coaching styles and my current offers. Knowing how you like to learn and what your learning weaknesses are will help you, and your coach navigate through them!

Question 3: What’s your timeline?

The last thing to consider is your timeline. Where are you now? And what kind of coaching would support you at this stage?

New to New-ish Virtual Service Providers

If you’re just starting out, a short coaching call would be a great jumping off point. In my Introductory Coaching Calls, we’ll spend 45 minutes and give you time and space to all those immediate questions that will help build your foundation. More about Introductory Calls can be found here.

For Established Online Entrepreneurs

If the ball is rolling in your business and you’re ready to focus on building what’s next, a Mentorship Program may be a good fit for you. At this stage, it’s common to feel the highs and lows of entrepreneurship, and it’s so important to have someone who will keep you motivated and will navigate *all* the things that come up. In my 3-month Mentorship Program, we’ll meet twice every month to discuss your marketing, strategy, messaging, business culture, and anything else that you have questions about. If you’re ready to take the reins and prioritize your own growth, reach out using this form to get more info about my Mentorship Program.

For People In-Between

Feeling a little overwhelmed at the thought of a 3-month commitment, but also looking for more than a 45-minute conversation? Then you may be needing something that meets you in the middle.

You may also have an established business as a virtual service provider, but it’s not booming empire (yet!) the way you had hoped. If you’re at that point, don’t fret…things will get better, and you’re not alone. A two-hour strategy session will give us time to reconsider your process and create some action items to help you in moving forward.

These questions are ones you should ask yourself and sit with for some time. Allow yourself the freedom to dream about your ambitions before pushing yourself to hire a long-term coach immediately.

Working with a coach will be extremely beneficial once you’ve given it some thought around what you’re looking for and have a clear vision of your goals. Learn more about how I can help you here, drop me a note in this contact form, or DM me on Insta to get started.
